American Versions?

Beitrag: # 19282Beitrag subi »

Hi,

I was wondering if there are also American Asterix versions. I'm working on a presentation on special types of translation and when our lecturer - he actually is American - saw the English comic he said "Wow, I'd never seen it in English!" I found a list (on wikipedia, I think) with all the different names, and they had different names for British and American.
Then I read an article where they mentioned that parts of the comics were published in newspapers. So, are there actual Asterix comic books in America or do they use Bell's and Hockridge's translation and just change the names?

Thanks,

Hello subi,

indeed there are. Have a look at http://www.asterix-obelix.nl/ (-> Dossiers -> English/American).

[edit: Erik was faster ... as always]
You are right.

There is a separate edition for the USA. First there has been a serialization in the comic section of newspapers, like you say.
Then a few books have been separately translated into 'American' by Steven Caron. For many years in the USA the series contained five books where the names of some of the leading figures were different from the other books (publisher Distribooks).

Now the USA uses the 'old' Bell and Hockridge translation, like the British (now Orion publishers)

Thank you so much for the quick answers, that was a big help!
Now that I know so much about all these differences I'm even keener on re-reading all the books, especially in foreign languages.
